When Is the Best Time of Year to Get Married in the Smoky Mountains?

For most couples, the best time to get married in the Smoky Mountains is fall, and our pick is October. When we asked Melanie at The Barn at Chestnut Springs to choose one month, she said: “October. Perfect weather and orange and red and green foliage and painted mountains.”

Fall is also when the weather is most on your side. September through November are the driest months of the year in the Smokies, according to the National Park Service. The trade-off is demand. Fall dates book first, and they book early. Below is what each season looks like, so you can pick the one that fits your day.

Why Fall Is the Most Requested Season

Ask which months fill first at the Barn and the answer is quick: “Sept & October & November (fall, painted mountains).” Our availability page says the same thing: Saturdays in September and October go first.

The Weather

National Park Service averages for Gatlinburg, the closest published station to us at about 1,289 feet, put fall highs at 83°F in September, 73°F in October and 61°F in November. Lows run 55°F, 43°F and 33°F. Rain averages 3.0, 3.1 and 3.4 inches, on 5, 6 and 7 days a month. The park describes fall as warm days alternating with cool nights, so plan a layer for your guests once the sun goes down.

The Color

The National Park Service says peak color below 4,000 feet usually runs from mid-October to early November. That is the “painted mountains” look couples ask us about.

How Early to Book

Fall dates go fast. In Melanie’s words, “dates fill up usually 12-18 months out and we are booking 2028 October dates already.” If you have your heart set on an October Saturday, start looking well over a year ahead.

The Crowds

Great Smoky Mountains National Park logged more than 12 million visits in 2024, and the park says it is consistently the most-visited national park. October is its busiest month. In 2025 the park counted 1,561,683 recreation visits in October, more than any other month. Plan guest travel and lodging early.

Spring: Mild and Green, With Showers

Spring highs average 61°F in March, 71°F in April and 79°F in May, with lows of 34°F, 42°F and 50°F. Rain averages 4.5 to 5.3 inches a month, on 8 or 9 days. In April, rain usually falls as afternoon showers.

March can still surprise you. The park notes that snow is possible any time in March, mainly at higher elevations. It also notes that severe storms, including tornadoes, happen in spring and summer.

Summer: Warm and Busy, the Wettest Stretch

Summer highs average 86°F in June, 88°F in July and 87°F in August, with lows near 60°F. It is the wettest stretch of the year, with 5.2 to 5.7 inches of rain on 9 or 10 days a month. The park sums up summer as “heat, haze, and humidity,” and afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common.

Summer is busy in the park, too. July and June were its second and third busiest months in 2025, after October.

Winter: Quiet, Cozy and Easier to Book

Winter highs average 52°F in December, 51°F in January and 54°F in February. About half of winter days reach 50°F or more, and highs occasionally hit the 70s. Most nights are at or below freezing. At low elevations, snows of an inch or more happen one to five times a year.

Winter is the park’s quietest season. January and February were its two least-visited months in 2025, with 276,999 and 409,449 recreation visits. It is dark by five, and the barn is lit from the inside.

Holiday Season in the Smokies

From November into January the area is lit up for the holidays. Winterfest lights run November 6, 2026, to January 31, 2027, across Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville, and Pigeon Forge calls it “one of the most popular times of year for visitors.” Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas runs November 6, 2026, to January 3, 2027. That gives your guests plenty to do, but it also means a busy weekend in town.

If a holiday-season wedding appeals to you, most November and December 2026 weekends are still open at the Barn.

What If It Rains on Your Wedding Day?

Every season here brings some rain, so ask any venue about its weather plan. Ours is simple. As Melanie puts it, “We have a rain plan so we pivot the barn or to inside the barn.” Your day keeps going under a roof.

Getting Your Guests Here

For guests who are flying in, McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville is under an hour from Pigeon Forge. In fall and during the holidays, ask guests to book their rooms early.

So, Which Season Should You Choose?

If fall color and dry weather matter most, choose fall, and book early. October is our favorite. If you want an easier date and a quieter park, look at winter. Spring and summer bring green mountains and warmer days, with more chance of rain.

When you are ready to see the venue, start at The Barn at Chestnut Springs, compare our packages and pricing, or check open dates. Any open date can be held for 48 hours after your tour. Book within 7 days of your tour and get a free cake or a free s’mores bar.
